That's a wrap...and not a bow

I asked my sister to make me a snuggly scarf that I could wear several ways. So she did, but to her consternation it had to be extra long in order for me to position it in all of the ways I planned. And then I found out that I tie a really bad bow. So I am working on that and using said scarf in other ways until then. I mean, if I had to actually look it up because my bow didn't remotely resemble what I wanted, I need some skills. Anyway I wrapped it...& my scarf kept me warm on this windy day. I think the hair is your clue that it was in fact, tres windy. Hope you are warm and dry.

I don't think I am a Valentine's kind of girl. It's not that I dislike it... but it's not a top priority for me to dress up in celebration. Though I do like the flowers and layering romantic items in the house. Now St. Pat's Day? I dress for that. Thank goodness for EBEW forcing us out of our staid comfort zones once again, right?

This month it was pink and red, two colors I don't wear often and now we are mixing them? I didn't stress... I just went for vintage. Are you decked in hearts and flowers today?

The weather outside this weekend was truly frightful. Once again I am impressed with bloggers who live in snowy, cold climes and manage to snap pics outside! Instead we stayed in and found some crafty things to do. I played with vintage bedspreads and books to decorate a bit for Valentine's Day. I redo this room a lot...it gives me a chance to rotate vintage treasures and get a new color scheme every few months. What doesn't often change are my throw pillows made from vintage fabric. I think they go with everything. For the holidays we were decked in plaid...

but Valentine's called for more romance and pink blossoms. Mr. Lemondrop grabbed some bare branches from the yard and I used tissue paper to create a few pink blooms while the little lemondrop made a mess under my feet.

Everything I create is very personal for me and though I take it very seriously, I have fun doing it and I am happy. I put classic literature and lyrics in most of my art. I strive to make wearable art and I believe you should be able to take your favorite Shakespeare sonnet with you wherever you, should it be on your wall or around your neck. I think you should wake up in the morning singing your favorite song and still find those lyrics hanging around your wrist. I take the words that seem to me as though they mean something and I put it in my art. It is never just something that you see, it always says something too. Words are art. And they come up around here very often.

It must be a bit chilly out! I don't often wear pants more than once a week, but here I am.... an army green girl. I love army green, but it's a little too serious for me. How to combat that? (yes, that was an intentional pun) Wear something bright and cheerful, color coordination be damned. In the same week I found these pants at Target and this Brooks Brothers shirt whilst thrifting. Brooks Brothers at a thrifting price= yes please. I had to get the pants, they go with these booties so well... do you like my logic? Have boots, must buy pants, have pants, must buy thrifty shirt. Once upon a time I was a tshirt and jeans girl on a casual afternoon, before I fell in love with vintage dresses and skirts. Now when I am in a denim mood it's only because I have something vintage I think will partner with it. I've said it before friends, plaid is my favorite color. And there are others like me out there methinks, after all there are 56,847 plaid items for sale on etsy. Or wait- does that mean I am the only one shopping for them and they are all sitting there waiting for me? I am not sure now... Either way, this little vintage coat worn as a duster a la the old west puts a smile on my face even in chilly temperatures. Don't worry, I am not hiding sidearms, but I am a quick draw at a thrift store. I grab that vintage item and BANG, into the cart. Watch out.

Some days you just feel kinda tomboyish. So denim and plaid are there for you, right? I remember having loads of denim shirts years ago, only to feel they were no longer stylish and a longing to be rid of them. Fast forward to 2012 I want them ALL back. Except maybe that chambray one with too many pockets.

I love this little dress- new from Target just last week. It's one of those "now and later" dresses you see in the magazines. Now... with tights and winter layering... later with flipflops and margaritas. Yes, a margarita is a perfectly acceptable accessory for almost any event. Except church and job interviews. And if your interview is at a bar, then it's ok there too, right? Can you tell I've had a long week and it's only Tuesday? I go back and forth on liking a big ole' boyfriend jacket each fall. Of course I know a cropped and fitted jacket is a bit more figure flattering, especially on someone of my height. But there is something comforting about comfortable. So here I am again in a boyfriend jacket that's plenty oversized, roomy, and professorial. There are even patches on the elbows of this vintage jacket. Makes me want to give someone a lecture. Hey- professorial sartorial! Can I coin that? Nah, with my luck I'd sell it to google and have them cancel it like everything else they are wrecking havoc with.

Oops.

I love that Mad Men has made wearing vintage and retro figure flattering dresses popular again. I usually don't gravitate to such pieces because I value comfort above all else- but this dress actually is a bit of both. And while I can't hold a candle to the way Christina Hendricks fills out a bodycon dress, I can give it the old college try. So here it is (and by the by, I am standing at a college campus to make the college try official). Are you in favor of fitted body con or are you at your best with something less so?

There's a Texas saying, if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes. This weekend we have had everything from cold to warm and wet to dry winds. What's a girl to do but layer? And give up on hairstyles that are perfect of course.

This little homemade crocheted sweater is almost too toasty for me, but I could not resist trying it this windy day. It reminds me of things my mother would have crocheted when I was young. I am torn between calling it cornflower blue or baby blue. I think I should be able to create a new color just like crayola does...Lemondrop Blue? Let's start a petition.

Last week when I dropped into my local FedEx to mail a package I found their system down and a long line. So naturally I thought I could pop into a local vintage store to see if I could find anything that called my name.

Before blogging I never ever felt like the world was a stage and that I should jump on interesting backdrops to prove that I found another great vintage item to wear. But now that I have you I look for a place to pose daily. I thought this parking garage was a nice option, and a bench a nice stage.

This vintage skirt came from a small town thrift store discovered on our drive back home from visiting relatives at Thanksgiving. Any trip is an excuse to check out the shopping in route! The hubs= not amused. But since I was gracious and traveled to see inlaws he was without complaint.

Lovely weather we're having...

Today in Central Texas we are having foggy, drizzly weather, but on Saturday it was sunshiney goodness all day long. It was a day for bare legs, walking in a park, and fun with the loves of my life. I've had this vintage dress for a couple of falls, but missed wearing it last year when I was still carrying the little lemondrop. Isn't it nice to rediscover a piece you never meant to neglect in the first place? These shoes are even better than the rediscovered dress because I won them in a blog giveaway on Jennifhsieh. See? I have always been a shearling fan, even before Kate Hudson wowed the world in hers. I love my almost famousish coat and this little vest. Both are warm and snuggly and the color is one of my favorites. A shearling vest is a bit easier than a heavy coat because I don't look or feel like a fluffy sheep when I keep it on inside. I try not to resemble farm animals too often, but if it makes winter this comfy I guess I'll just have to go with it. Hope you are warm and comfy today too.

The expression "in black and white" means that something should be obvious, easy, simple to understand. Maybe that's why it's an outfit staple for a busy lady. But since I had to wear that color combination at my first hostess job in a restaurant I am occasionally reluctant to don it ...but today EBEW is celebrating some fave black and white closet finds. Mine has to be this vintage dress and jacket with the rick rackety trim. It was one of my first vintage purchases years ago. I remember finding it stuffed between newer items in a thrift store and thinking I would never wear such a white dress- I am a fan of coffee, chocolate, and small children most days. But I actually have worn this quite a few times, and hope to again... except to weddings.

I love wearing this vintage white dress during the winter, it's way too warm for summer. Honestly, I think its a vintage nurses' uniform, but it fits well and is comfy. When I got dressed these tights were a fun burst of color cheering me up on a Monday, but upon reflection these pictures make me think of candy canes. A bit late in the season to want to look like a candy cane, no? But red can make a blue Monday a little better so I stand by my choice. What color do you wear when you want a little pick me up?

You know, I could be wearing a figure flattering dress, or at the very least a fitted cardi to show that in fact I do have a waist. But why when I have this lovely snuggly vintage super thick sweater to wrap up in? In fact, it was so cozy I didn't wear a coat out the house. And lo and behold, I found a fall tree in the midst of winter to pose in front of just to make you think this was an archival picture. Sorry to break it to you, but I am thrilled to be dressing this lazily right here in the middle of the work week instead of a Saturday last fall. Now all I need is my next good book to cozy up to and I am set for the afternoon. Unless I am distracted by blog reading and that pile of magazines I have waiting near the front door....

I like how we are only a few days into the new year and I have already tarnished my resolution list with a missed gym visit and a bag of milk chocolate. I am chalking both up to the stress of going back to work after a nice break and moving on. After all there is some nutrient value in chocolate and my bum needed to recover from the enthusiastic attempt I made at lunges on New Year's Day. I recently read an article on embracing my failures and going forward...so here I go! On to a resolution that I can achieve- trying new things. And by new I mean wearing new colors I normally disdain. And by disdain I mean purple. My mother loves purple, and it was one of my high school colors, thus I usually avoid it. I can find very little evidence of it in my blogged outfits. (and if an outfit isn't blogged does it really exist?)

When I saw this oversized 80's cardi I wondered if it had belonged to Denise of the Cosby show. Sandra had more subdued taste. Have you seen the Cosby sweater project? Other bloggers have mentioned it before, but every time I wear an 80's sweater I go visit to see if I can find it there.

Do you remember crazy sock day in school? I guess I never got over that because I love a fun sock to show off. In which my family is confused by my plaid pants

I wore this to a family dinner, and was taken aback when no one commented on my pants right away. I mean, they aren't exactly subtle. I teased my aunt that they were probably hers when she was in high school. She thought they look more like a pair her husband would have worn. The whole discussion confused my grandmother who thought I really had borrowed them from the family archives. Nope, just a small town charity shop! But it was fun to reminisce about the places these pants may have seen...besides Brady Brunch first runs. And if you are curious, polyester is super warm in winter, those poor souls who wore them in summer could tell ya.

Although, at least two ladies remarked they would consider wearing my sweater and didn't understand the "ugly" part. This year a large Christmas tree on the floor was out of the question. The littlest Lemondrop would topple it easily. We brought a bit of Christmas into our bedroom instead. He's still our bunkmate, so any decor had to be easy to keep clean and away from him. Everything is washable and or wipeable, and even my vintage isn't too fragile it can't be enjoyed. And my must have for easy Christmas cleanups? Baby wipes! We have plenty for a reason- they are a great way to dust, remove finger smudges, and any cheerio residue that somehow finds its way onto everything.

It's been really cold, then kinda warmish, then really cold. We took these on a COLD day this week, can you tell? I bought this vintage skirt in hopes I would have lots of opportunities to wear it before Christmas... and I have. But it's been tempting to use it as a throw blanket in front of the television too. I love purchases that can do double duty.... you know it would be a cute Christmas tree skirt too now that I think about it!

This little vintage coat gave me the urge to hit the slopes (we haven't any) or the trails. The trails it was. Fine... to be honest I only meandered a bit at the foot of the trails, the rest of the time I was snuggled in the car with a warm cup of decaf, enjoying the scenery. But at this pretty cliff I struck a pose. The things I do for this blog... it was cold I tell you. I agree with IFB, I must be a real blogger because interesting things that happen MUST be blogged to prove their existence. What about you? Are you a blogger who must document it all?

I love this vintage polka dotted blouse, but I never remember to wear it. There are just too many dots for me unless it's layered. Polka dots are such a happy print, and in the midst of winter I am not always so perky. My somber black H and M dress takes it down a bit, but somehow I ended up looking like Minnie anyway. Which Disneyish character are you this week? I am really better off as Grumpy or Sleepy, though I am working Snow White's complexion pretty well. Happy Monday, friends.

When I found this lovely vintage coat I fell in love with the fabulous collar right away. It was at a thrift store in San Antonio, Texas, on a thrifting jaunt with my mother that I first clapped eyes on her. Nevermind if I don't really wear red that often, and that the sleeves are a tad long. Red is a powerful attractant. I take this coat out a lot in December and Februarå, and it rests in my closet in between. Any coats you've loved on sight?

The case of the abominable snow sweater

This is the 1950's version of the puff jacket. You know, the coat that makes everyone look like a marshmellow? It's the coziest little thing, but kinda puffy. My mother said there was no way to appear remotely slender in such a sweater. Thanks, Mom. I do have the urge to yell, "Bumbles BOUNCE!" when wearing it. But I am always up for something unique and vintage, so here we are.

It is defintely warm. I think a conservative mother would have purchased this sweater for her daughter to wear on a date- you can hardly get the buttons undone when fastened. The first chasity sweater. Sorry, sometimes I just say what I think. But what the heck, it's my blog, right?

I think we are all a bit intrigued, it's the reason the Delightful Dozen has had so much success. This idea actually isn't new to me because I have a sister whose style is tres different from my own. I enjoy sharing clothes to get her interpretation of a garment I wore. Even in high school we'd share clothes (reluctantly). Usually she goes an entirely different direction with a look as she is more conservative than I am about pattern and color. Jessica and I agreed to swap something, and she sent me this skirt! Of course, I added my staple pattern and first love- plaid and a few other faves like my poem cuff. I am sending her something in return. Do you swap? What's holding you back if you haven't?

This vintage dress has been with me for a while, in fact, I have washed it a bit too often with a machine instead of by hand and have regretted it. And yes, it's a summer/spring staple. But sometimes you just need a shot of spring in your winter, no matter how much you like the current season.

Brown booties were not my first choice with gray tights, in fact the color combination really kinda bothers me- but the booties are way better on the toes than the clogs I should have worn... so I declare this I'll wear what I want Wednesday in the name of all rule breakers and fashion risk takers...now go out and wear something impractical~and non-matchy!

I think I would have loved to have lived in the midst of 1960's fashions. I love all things Mod, and all things sweet vintage 60's. This little pea green coat dress is no exception. I have had it for years now, and it's held up well after a few trips to the dry cleaners and washings in a modern washing machine. I love the easy, swingy comfy style. Truth be told this was the dress we should all have worn on Thanksgiving Day- plenty of room. I am envious of the girl who could buy and sew this little dress in the 60's. There are still loads of patterns around if you are talented...

Color blocking or random use of bright colors together, who decides?

I'm all for the color blocking trend, but frankly since plaid is my favorite color I am just not that good at it. I adore wearing orange in the fall. So when I pulled out this vintage orange dress I thought I'd add a shot of bright. In the form of purple... and velvet. I like to skirt the "tacky during daylight" line sometimes.

I know it's an odd time of year to worry about finding sunglasses...but ever since I found the French pair at a small town thrift store I am on the hunt. I once read about Jackie O's penchant for storing loads of sunglasses near her front door so that she could always grab a pair on the way out. Viola... my vintage bowl holds several Jackie size pairs now! If you are going to copy someone Jackie was no slouch at sunglasses. I think I have almost the exact pair that she's wearing here! She always looked fabulous in them. I don't leave my 1950's pink sunnies in the bowl. They are in excellent condition, and were a gift from my family, so I keep them put away more than not. What's your latest vintage obsession, dears?

And I will be listing my could-be obsessions up until the holidays...just in case anyone I am married to or related to by blood is looking to treat me. Can't blame a girl for tryin'.

I was in line at the post office the other day and noticed an older gentlemen who was wearing pants that resembled some I own. That should make any sane person question themselves, but right away I just wanted to wear mine again. So... without further adieu (or concern for fashion apparently) I give you- comfy pants. Perfect for lounging, eating big dinners, and sitting on the floor with little lemondrops. I tried to redeem myself with painted toenails. I love candy corn even in November, what can I say? These are cuter but I am fine with mine. I might try candy canes next. Can you tell that life with a small boy causes me to find entertainment close to home? Hope you had a comfy causal weekend too.

I don't mind gray skies if there is a plaid jacket around. It's comfy to throw on when it gets a little windy and my baby doll dress goes a flyin' plus...it's plaid. And if you and I have been friends long enough you know all about my love of all things plaid. Every year at this time fashion mags do a small piece on the joys of plaid for fall. And every year they act like it's a new idea. (I am channeling Miranda in Devil Wears Prada..."Florals for Spring...duh.")

But I have to admit, I enjoy each little feature simply because it is plaid. So keep it up, magazines! Throw some plaid in there and I will most likely continue to pop you in my supermarket cart and annoy my husband with your clutter. You had me at tartan. Want to find your plaid? Try here.

Many bloggers have complained about trying to get those outfit posts done with the time change. I've struggled myself, but I am not an OOTD blogger anymore since I have a little man to worry about more than the clothes I am wearing most days. But it's great when I can get dressed, stay relatively stain free of baby food, and get some photographs in before the sun sets for the day. Throw in a great vintage bag and pretty vintage backdrop? Serendipitous jacket find and pretty cats

This jacket was a serendipitous find. I had just brought in some items to sell at a local buy/sell/trade shop that occasionally has some nice vintage pieces when I spotted this jacket hanging behind the counter. I asked about it right away only to be told it was on hold for someone else. Boo. After walking around the store for some time I realized that the jacket was the only thing I wanted! The manager finally looked up all the hold information she had on it and viola! The hold had expired! It was mine- and I had been looking for a little leather jacket to wear when it was nippy but not cold. YAY recycled clothing stores. Booo warming trend this week so that I can't wear it much. The dress is someone's homemade effort and has a great comfy shape which was great for wearing out to dinner (hence the wrinkles, sorry).

As we drove down this little country road we saw a train stopped for a break (or a brake, whichever).

We decided to stop for a break too, to enjoy the fall air that wasn't too cold for bare legs but was cool enough for a light coat! And this coat, which is boyish, takes the edge off of my girlish dress that would otherwise scream spring.

YAY! That's a fun fall day. Family drive, baby falls asleep, Mama gets to sit down for an extended period of time without worrying about entertaining anyone at all.

Except I did miss you, of course, not a technology device in sight.

This month EBEW decided on colored tights! I ADORE colored tights. I love them bright, with patterns, and I can't wait for tight weather! But today? I picked one of my plainest pair. They are a blue grey to match the cloudy skies. I just couldn't put on bright pink on such a drab day for some reason. I think I need to tights shop- I am in need of a pumpkin colored pair in honor of fall. And some red ones in honor of December... Where do you buy your fave tights?

I will admit something embarrassing, I have been known to purchase the kids' tights when I can find them big enough! They have some cute patterns and colors after all...

If this outfit seems randomly thrown together- it is. I had my little plaid dress and tights all picked out to wear with a nice, conservative jacket. But I gravitated towards this seasonal vest that I love wearing in fall- and voila, pattern mishmash ensues. I obviously don't take fashion seriously. But cute tights? Serious business. Seriously.

Any excuse to pull out the vintage coats

For years I have collected vintage coats- and it's ridiculous. I live in a place that seldom sees fridgid winter weather (with the exclusion of last winter when I brought home an infant of course). I have enough vintage coats to wear a different one every week of the year now. It started with just one.

I had the standard new coats, black pea coat, raincoat, one new trench... then I saw the lovely cream car coat at the thrift store. It needed some tlc from the dry cleaner, but came back good as new. I started looking at every opportunity for one of a kinds coats- and found them. I don't remember when I found this little leather coat. It has tie closures at the wrist and waist, and a hood in back, all leather. And I love the color for fall.

Too bad it's so warm again this week- but I can wear it in the mornings without looking totally silly.

How many coats do you own? Is it an embarrassing number or a practical one?

We are still having plenty of warmth each afternoon so I can wear bare legs and a little coat to keep the wind away. Mr. Lemondrop said that this coat and dress didn't match. And I agree, they may not match like items in the JC Penney catalog do, but they GO. And that's good enough for me.

We are about to receive another cold front, but in the meantime this little Missoni dress is a great go to for a day outside. Just a little weight to it and washable in case I want to sit in the grass and contemplate how badly my legs need sunlight. Or a spray tan. Missoni is still all over ebay, over 13,000 pieces. It's coming down in price though! I purchased one more dress at my local Target that someone must have returned (I am a long time Missoni fan, I just had to, it was hanging there all alone and unappreciated). I am still blissfully happy with my pieces, controversy and pain in the ass process of getting them notwithstanding. Happy almost weekend, lovies.

Love this little 80's sweater, such attitude in such a tiny garment. And I do mean tiny, it's meant to be a bit short and I forgot to add a belt. Do you like my wind swept hair? Sexy, no? More like annoying because I couldn't see, but I am too lazy to do pictures more than once. I just share what I can when I can now that I have a little Lemondrop to fuss over.

Mr. Lemondrop, my photographer, seems to think he is Giles Bensimon lately, and has several comments about my choice of backgrounds for blog shots. I love historic places, and can be happy with any background that is old, crumbly, and has a history. Mr. L. only likes historic places that are restored to previous grandeur. Give me chippy paint and worn wood and I am just fine. Most of my wardrobe is vintage, so a vintage background just makes sense to me. I was into shabby chic back when it was just old and worn out castoffs.

This little vintage skirt has a sweet pattern that reminds me of kaleidoscopes. (Perhaps I looked at it for too long, and now I have kaleidoscope eyes...is that what they meant?) The weather is playing cat and mouse with us again. A little fall and a whole lot of Indian Summer... I love fall, so you can't keep me away from her colors, no matter how warm the October day may eventually be. Give me a cool breeze in the morning and I will take that as license to dress as if I don't live in a fall fickle state.

I like the brown rose pattern on this little dress because it reminds me of a tapestry that my grandmother would choose as a sofa pillow. A quaint, old fashioned print, but a new dress in a fallish palette. I actually feel funny wearing this dress before fall, even though the weight is more spring/summer because of the colors. So a vintage cinnamon blazer is in order to stop the cool wind we received this week from chilling me(whoot!). What's hiding in your closet that might be mistaken for something from grandma's couch? Oh, was it just me then?

When I first tried this vintage skirt I thought the length was a bit awkard for my height. The same week I found a picture of Katie Holmes in a red skirt with booties and thought, I'll give it one more go before shortening or selling it! And I think the booties did the trick for me. I've had these for at least three years, and animal print and booties are still on the runways... a fortuitous purchase. Of course, I still don't have the rest of her lovely assets, but hey, one thing at a time. Who has inspired you to try something new in your wardrobe this week?

It's still warm here in the afternoon, but mornings are occasionally chilly enough to break out something suitable for fall, like a Buffalo plaid top! Coffee in the am and iced tea by the afternoon. That's how we roll. So- layers it is here in Central Texas.
